Getting Started: Building Confidence as a New Horse Guardian

Taking on the role of a horse guardian (here at the 2 Grey Mares we don’t like the word owner very much!) is exciting and full of promise, but it can also feel a little overwhelming at first. Whether you’re a complete beginner or someone returning to horses after a long break, starting out with the right mindset and approach will help you feel confident and prepared. Here are some essential tips to get you and your new horse friend off to the best possible start.

1. Get Comfortable with the Basics

The foundation of good horse care starts with understanding the basic daily needs of your horse. Focus on feeding, friends, and freedom. So a good forage based diet, ensuring they have horse comanions and space to move. Spend time learning how to safely spend time with your horse getting to know them. These simple routines not only establish a relationship but also help you gain confidence in your horse connction safely.

2. Observe, Don’t Rush

As a new guardian, it’s natural to want to jump right into the action—riding, coaching, and spending hours together. But one of the most valuable things you can do early on is observe your horse in their environment. Notice how they interact with other horses, respond to their surroundings, and adjust to you being there. Observing helps you pick up on body language and the small signals that reveal how they’re feeling. When you understand your horse’s unique “normal,” it’s easier to recognize when they’re content or if something might be wrong.

3. Set Small, Achievable Goals

Instead of expecting big progress right away, aim for small wins. Maybe your goal for the week is to get your horse comfortable with being groomed all over, or to walk quietly with you from the field to the stable. Achieving these little goals gives you both a sense of accomplishment and builds your confidence as a horse guardian. Remember, each small step brings you closer to a more connected, trusting partnership.

4. Don’t Be Afraid to Ask for Help

There’s a lot to learn in the world of horses, and nobody has all the answers right away. Reach out, of course I am going to suggest our membership, it’s an amazing resourse to learn from but also to be able to speak to others in your position, builds a support network. We are more than happy to share advice, especially with beginners who are genuinely eager to learn. Asking questions and seeking guidance shows you’re committed to doing what’s best for your horse and that’s what our private members group offers.

5. Enjoy the Journey, Trust the Process

The most important advise I can give is for you to have fun as you learn. Learning to care for and be with a horse is a journey, and each day offers new insights and moments to connect. Don’t put pressure on yourself to know it all from the start. Mistakes will happen—that’s normal! What matters is that you learn, adjust, and stay open to the lessons your horse has to teach you. With patience, curiosity, and a willingness to grow, you’ll find yourself becoming more confident and capable over time.

Final Thoughts

As a beginner or someone coming back to horses, you’re building a foundation that will set the tone for your relationship with your horse. With each interaction, you’re not only learning how to care for your horse but also how to communicate, understand, and connect in ways that are meaningful. Take it one step at a time, keep learning, and most importantly, enjoy the unique journey you’re on with your horse!
